Best time to visit Montaza Palace

For comfort, choose a weekday morning and avoid the middle of a summer day. Alexandria is mild most of the year, but the estate is largely open to the sun, and Fridays and holidays fill the gardens and the roads around them.

Season

Alexandria’s coastal position keeps it cooler and breezier than inland Egypt, which is why it has long been a summer retreat. Spring and autumn give the most comfortable walking, with warm days and softer light.

Midsummer is hot and humid and the gardens fill up, especially with families in the evenings. Winter is mild and often empty, but the coast can be windy and cooler than people expect; bring a layer.

Time of day

Early morning gives the calmest, coolest conditions and the best light for the gardens and the sea. Late afternoon to sunset is also attractive, with softer light and cooler air, but it is also the most crowded part of the day.

The middle of a summer day is the least comfortable time for walking, with little shelter on the open stretches.

Crowds and holidays

Fridays and public holidays are the busiest. Ramadan evenings and Eid holidays are particularly lively, and school breaks bring families throughout the day. If you want quiet paths for photography or a relaxed walk, these are the times to avoid.

The roads and parking around the estate are affected too, so a crowded garden day also means a slower arrival and departure.

Putting it together

  • Calmest: weekday, early morning, spring or autumn
  • Best light: early morning or late afternoon
  • Most lively: Friday afternoon, Eid and holidays
  • Least comfortable: midsummer midday

Weather through the year

Alexandria’s climate is Mediterranean: hot, humid summers and mild, sometimes wet winters, moderated by the sea. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots for walking, with warm days and softer light.

We give no month-by-month temperature figures, because averages hide the day you will actually get. Check a forecast for Alexandria in the days before you travel, and plan the hour of your visit around it.

The religious and public calendar

Fridays, public holidays, Ramadan evenings and the Eid holidays change both the crowds and the mood of the gardens. Ramadan in particular shifts daily rhythms, with more activity later in the day, while Eid brings families out in numbers.

The Islamic calendar moves relative to the Gregorian year, so the exact dates of Ramadan and the Eids change each year. Look up the dates for your own travel year rather than relying on a fixed date.

Choosing a day to avoid road pressure

Crowds in the gardens and congestion on the corniche tend to go together, so the quietest garden day is usually also the easiest day for arriving and leaving. A midweek morning avoids both.

If your only free day is a Friday or a holiday, plan to arrive early and to leave before the evening peak, rather than in the middle of it.
